Home Remedies for Sweaty Hands and Feet
Do you avoid handshakes in social gatherings because of your sticky, sweaty hands? If yes, the chances are that you might be facing the problem of sweaty hands and feet. Sweating is essential to maintain the body temperature, but as they say, an excess of everything is bad. It is a source of irritation and embarrassment for the person and also lays a profound impact on their social life. This problem may arise due to stress, nervousness, hormonal changes, etc. Below are some of the natural home remedies to combat sweaty palms and feet.

1. Baking Soda
Due to alkaline nature, baking soda serves as the best home remedy for sweating hands. Put three tablespoons of baking soda in warm water. You will notice effervescence. Dip your hands for half an hour in it and rub them with clumps of soda underneath. Pat dry with a cloth after you are done. You can also use this remedy for your feet.
Cornstarch works similar to talcum powder and stops sweaty hands and feet instantly. Dust your hands and feet with some cornstarch powder. Let it stay for half an hour and then wash it off. It absorbs the sweat and keeps them dry.
Note – You can add baking soda to cornstarch for effective results.
3. Cold Water
Water is the most common remedy for avoiding sweat. Drink 10-12 glasses of cool water in a day. Soaking the hands and feet in cold water for 15-20 minutes can also give you relief for some time.
Organic rose water is one of the best home remedies to cure the irritating problem of sweaty palms. It can be purchased from any nearby store, or you can make it on your own. Boil some fresh rose petals in a cup of water for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture and keep the rosewater in an airtight container. Apply it on your hands and feet with the help of a cotton ball.
Note – Rosewater can be mixed with vinegar to make the limbs drier.
5. Lemon Juice
Another effective remedy to keep sweat away is to apply lemon juice using cotton balls. If you have sensitive skin, add a little amount of water to it. An additional benefit of using this remedy is that lemon has a sweet-sour fragrance which acts as a natural deodorant.
A mixture of lemon juice and vodka can also be rubbed on hands, but remember to wash it after 20 minutes.
Alternatively, mix lime juice and salt, and rub it gently until it gets dry. This remedy slows down the activity of the sweat glands.
6. Tomato Juice
Tomato juice acts as a coolant for our body which, in turn, helps sweat less. It lowers the body temperature when you dip your hands in it. Tomato also contains high levels of sodium which keep the hands dry.
7. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar can be applied to our hands and feet, or can be consumed with a few drops of honey on an empty stomach. It acts as an astringent and keeps the skin pores tight. It can also be applied on the armpits with a cotton ball dipped in the solution.
8. Boric Acid
Boric acid can be sprinkled on the gloves or socks to absorb the excess sweat. Keep them on for 48-72 hours and then wash your hands and feet with soapy water. It is a very effective remedy to treat the problem of sweaty hands and feet.
9. Tea Therapy
Tea contains astringent and antiperspirant properties which dry excess oil from the body. Soak 4-5 black tea bags in hot water. Put your hands or feet in it for 30 minutes. This remedy will reduce the perspiration for some days.
10. Fuller’s Earth
It is used for providing a soothing and cooling effect to the body, especially in summers. It can be applied to hands and feet for 15 minutes and washed off later. This remedy deposits a layer of natural minerals on the sweat glands of your hands and feet, thereby reducing sweating.
11. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a good antiperspirant. The lauric acid in it kills the bacteria responsible for the unwanted body odor. The soothing fragrance of the oil keeps you fresh all day long. Take a small amount of oil and rub it on the hands and feet to stop the sweat and nourish the skin. Alternatively, you can rub the coconut oil with your fingers on the sweat-prone areas. It is advisable to apply it after taking a bath.
Note: Over-application may cause staining of the clothes.
Since charcoal can absorb moisture from the body, many skincare products have included it in their ingredients list. Consume a teaspoon of activated charcoal with 8 oz. of water in the morning, but some people may experience pain and vomiting in doing so. In that case, do not consume it on an empty stomach. Instead, you can drink it after the dinner.
Activated charcoal is extremely messy if spilled, so try to keep it away from children or hard surfaces.
Avoid using it if you have any intestinal obstruction.
13. Consume a Nutritional Diet
It is not difficult to get rid of the sweating problem if you take a proper diet. Some foods prevent sweat to a great extent. You must include the following components in your daily meal:
- Zinc: Eatables containing zinc must be consumed on a regular basis. At least 50mg of zinc should be consumed in a day. Some of the food items rich in zinc are turkey, nuts, oysters, roasted pumpkin, low-fat roast beef, and lamb.
- Magnesium: Magnesium is found in bran, sunflower seeds, roasted soybeans, bananas, and cocoa powder. Such food items, when taken along with the zinc-rich diet, eliminate the body odor.
- Iodine-rich Foods: Thyroid disorder can also be one of the major reasons for sweaty hands. To avoid it, eat foods that are affluent in iodine, like eggs and fish. Natural salt is also a rich source of iodine.
This vegetable is of great help in reducing the excessive sweat. Take some potato slices and rub them on your hands and feet. Keep it for some time and then wash it off with water. Potato juice can also be applied to the areas prone to excessive sweating to get rid of the problem instantly.
Herbal Remedies for Curing Sweaty Hands and Feet
15. Sandalwood Powder
Use of sandalwood dates back to ancient times when people used to decorate their forehead with it to keep their head cool. Ayurveda also claims it to be an effective remedy for reducing the perspiration. Sandalwood powder can be mixed with lime juice and rosewater. The paste can be applied to the sweaty areas for some time and then washed off. Try it regularly to observe the results.
16. Green Tea
Green tea stops bacterial growth and detoxifies the body. It controls sweat by closing the pores naturally. Drink 3-4 cups of green tea every day. Alternatively, put some ice in green tea and soak a cotton ball in it. Dab it on the sweaty hands to get rid of the problem.
Wheatgrass is available in the form of juice or powder. Sweat helps release toxins and acids from the body. Wheatgrass juice neutralizes or dilutes the toxins, thereby reduces the necessity of sweating. Drinking 3-4 glasses of wheatgrass juice everyday can do wonders.
Note – Excess consumption of wheatgrass may cause nausea or a headache to some people.
18. Sage Tea
This is one of the best home remedies for sweating hands and feet. Sage tea has got antiperspirant properties. Add 1 tbsp sage to a cup of hot water and let it steep for five minutes. Strain the liquid and add lemon juice for taste. Drink it every morning on an empty stomach or before bedtime.
- You can also include sage in your salad.
- Alternatively, soak your feet in a mixture of sage powder and water for 20 minutes.
Note: Over dosage of sage tea may cause a headache.
Chamomile has astringent and antibacterial properties which make it one of the best remedies to treat sweaty hands and feet. Put one tsp chamomile herb into the hot water (1 cup) and leave it for 5 minutes. Drink this tea regularly.
- Another way to cure sweat is to dip the cotton balls in the tea and apply it to the sweat prone areas.
- Alternatively, you can add some drops of chamomile oil in warm water to take a bath.
Note: Do not consume chamomile in any form without consulting your doctor, if you are on medication or if you take any blood thinner.
20. Indian Lilac Oil
Indian lilac oil has powerful antiseptic and antibacterial nature that helps ward off the excessive sweat. It also reduces the bacterial growth. Indian lilac oil can be mixed with sweet scented oil such as lavender or jasmine and dabbed on the areas which sweat profusely, to get an instant relief.
21. Astragalus Root
One of the reasons for sweaty hands and feet is the malfunctioning of the spleen, an organ responsible for the regulation of fluids in the body. Astragalus root helps balance the spleen, thus controls the sweat. You can consume a small amount of astragalus root regularly.
22. Burdock Root
Burdock root works wonder when used as a natural cure for sweaty hands and feet. It can be consumed in the form of tincture and should be used at regular intervals in a day for effective results.
Note: People allergic to it must not consume it.
23. St. John’s Wort
Drink St. John’s Wort tea to reduce the mental stress and anxiety. The tea can be prepared by boiling one tablespoon of the herb in 1 cup water for 3-5 minutes. You can add a few drops of honey for enhancing the taste.
Note – High doses of it may cause sleeping problems to some people.
24. Lemon Balm
This herb has a refreshing smell of lemon that would make you feel fresh throughout the day. Boil the herb in water for five minutes to prepare a tea and consume it regularly. It would surely bring a significant improvement.
25. Witch Hazel
Witch hazel has been proven as an excellent herb for eliminating the sweat. Take a cotton ball, dip it in witch hazel oil and apply on your hands and feet. Use this remedy twice a day to control the perspiration.
26. Valerian Root
Valerian acts as a natural cure for sweaty hands and feet. It is sedative in nature. Valerian root can be combined with other herbs like sage to prepare tea. The tea should be regularly consumed to keep perspiration in check.
Note – It is best to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery after the intake of valerian root tea as it may cause dizziness to some. If you plan to stop its regular intake after some time, decrease it gradually, not at once.
- Always carry a cloth or towel so that you can wipe off extra sweat when required. Blotting paper can also be used for this purpose.
- Always wear loose clothes made up of cotton.
- Eat green leafy vegetables and include exercise in your daily routine.
- Change your socks or shoes after gymming or workout.
- Wash your hands frequently.
- Scrub the affected area under running water.
- Apply some powder to your feet before wearing the shoes.
- Don’t consume spicy and sugary food.
- Do not apply petroleum jelly on your hands and feet.
- Do not consume onion, garlic and curry leaves too often.
- Do not cover your hands with gloves unnecessarily as they prohibit the air supply.
- Avoid caffeinated products.
- Do not wear synthetic clothes.
